Sitewide Links: Are They Killing Your Traffic?

I was visiting one of my favorite home based business blogs today, like I do from time to time, and they recently posted a small experiment about the effect of sitewide links on your traffic.

This was quite interesting to me because I have been pondering and researching this exact same topic for a while now.

I've read many different views on the subject of whether or not sitewide links pointing to your website are good or bad. Some people claim they are great, some claim they have no effect, and some claim they are bad. One thing I have found for sure is that nobody seems to agree on it.

I have never done my own study on it so I can't offer a conclusion based on any facts, but my own opinion has always been that sitewide links are good to have, or at least can't hurt. Especially if the site with the links pointing to your website is in the same niche. However, I may be wrong.

The owners of the home based business blog that I read today conducted two small experiments to see what the effect of sitewide links had on a couple of their websites.

In both cases they put a link to the sites on an article directory with over 50,000 pages. The natural search traffic for both sites slowed after the links were added and picked back up once the links were removed.

This doesn't necessarily prove anything since it was only two small studies. However, it does at least show that it's possible sitewide links are hurting your natural search traffic. I suggest doing your own experiments with your websites and seeing what kind of results you get.

Remember to always keep testing, tweaking and researching to get the best results for your home based business website. You never know what you will find!
